Hit/run driver jailed; found to be illegal alien
The victim of a hit-and-run crash in Schuylkill County was able to get a photograph of the fleeing vehicle's registration, which led to his arrest. Police also learned that he was a wanted person and an illegal alien.
State police at Frackville said the incident occurred about 4 p.m. on Feb. 26 along Route 443 (Clamtown Road), in East Brunswick Township. Troopers said Daniel Naploes-Herrera, 38, of Reading and Denice M. Frederick, 46, of New Ringgold, were both westbound.
Naploes-Herrera attempted to pass Frederick on a double yellow line in a left curve. When he attempted to move back into the right lane he cut the pass too short with the right side of his 1994 Honda Accord striking the left front of Frederick's 2013 Dodge Dart. Both vehicles then entered New Ringgold borough.
Napoles-Herrera turned left and traveled south to the end of the borough and into a public park.
Frederick followed him and was able to take a photograph of his registration plate with her cellphone.
Naploes-Herrera then fled the scene without stopping. Frederick did not follow him any further. Frederick was not injured.
Troopers said on March 11 Napoles-Herrera was observed traveling eastbound on Route 443 outside New Ringgold. Police pulled him over. The driver was identified as Napoles-Herrera and he fit the description provided by Frederick.
He was taken into custody and fingerprinted, which revealed he was a wanted person from the state of Oregon and also had illegally entered the United States as a citizen of Mexico.
Troopers said Napoles-Herrera has been charged in the hit and run, as well as driving without a license and careless driving.
He was arraigned before District Judge James Ferrier of Orwigsburg and committed to the county prison in Pottsville in lieu of $10,000 straight cash bail and also on the outstanding warrant from Oregon.
Troopers said a detainer was also placed on him by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Department.
He is waiting extradition back to Oregon and possible deportation back to Mexico.
