An Invitation

Published May 26. 2016 04:00PM

The closing of St. Michael Church in Lansford (St. Katharine Drexel Parish) is imminent. In addition to its exterior magnificence, this house of God features about 20 stained glass windows (one was donated by my ancestors). Most of the windows are very large; they depict scenes every Christian can relate to. Every one is a beautiful work of art. An appraisal would reveal their value is astronomical.

The stations of the cross are large and beautiful. A lot of churches have wall plaques for each station. The ones at St. Michael are statuesque and feature Jesus on his journey to Calvary. As with the windows, the value of the stations has to be phenomenal.

I've been a member of St. Michael church since birth and have always valued its warmth. So, I'm extending an invitation to all to visit and enjoy the grand beauty of our church. Bring your camera and take pictures before or after services. Service hours are Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 8 and 10:30 a.m. The doors are usually open every weekday morning.

Immigrant Slovak coal miners supporting large families had money taken from their paychecks to honor their pledge to build the church. This house of worship is historical and should be preserved. It's a shame we're going to lose a gem. Why?

Sincerely,

Robert S. Hackash
