Healthy step program New to Medicare
Blue Mountain Health System will offer "Healthy Steps for Older Adults: A Falls Prevention Program" for adults 50 years and older, on Sept. 13 and15. Both sessions will be held from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the health system's Bowmanstown Medical Plaza, 512 Bank St. in Bowmanstown.
Healthy Steps is a four-hour, two-session workshop on preventing falls and staying active.
Hip fractures are the most serious fall-related injury; half of the people who break a hip do not recover fully. After the fall, they cannot stay at home on their own. Almost half of the people who enter nursing homes do so because of a fall.
The Healthy Steps curriculum includes awareness of the common causes of falls and things you are already doing that can help prevent falls; new tips that will fit easily into your daily routine, discovering opportunities and ideas for physical activities; activities you can practice at home that reinforce what you have learned, how you can improve your overall health and referrals and resources.
The program is free of charge, but please register at 610-377-7070.
Blue Mountain Health System will co-sponsor a New to Medicare Workshop with the Carbon County Area Agency on Aging at 6 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Blue Mountain Health System Bowmanstown Medical Plaza in Bowmanstown.
The four parts of Medicare include hospital care, physician and lab work and prescription drug coverage. It is important to get a basic understanding of the program.
A representative from the Carbon County Area Agency on Aging will provide a general introduction to Medicare.
