Self-management program for diabetes

Geisinger Health Plan and Carbon County Area Agency of Aging is offering a six-week program, “Live your best life with diabetes,” for people living with diabetes or those who are at risk of developing diabetes. This interactive group is open to the public and offered at no cost. Participants 18 years or older meet once a week to learn how to improve their health. Caregivers, friends and family are welcome to attend.

The diabetes self-management program will take place Fridays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. June 2 through July 7 at Jim Thorpe Penn-Kidder Senior Center, 995 Route 903, Jim Thorpe.

Preregistration is required. Sign up at any Carbon County senior center or call Anne Horrigan at 610-824-7830, ext. 227, to register or for more information.

During the program, you will learn:

• How to monitor your blood sugar and medication

• Skin and foot care

• Heathy changes to lower your glucose and A1C

• How to manage your symptoms, pain and fatigue

• How to reduce stress with relaxation techniques

• Healthy eating and exercise

• How to talk with your doctor and manage your symptoms

• How to set goals to improve your health
