Commissioned as US Naval officer

Matthew Schweitzer, son of Stephen and Debra Schweitzer, Lehighton, was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy in a ceremony held May 5 at the Schwab Auditorium at Penn State University, University Park.

Schweitzer graduated from Penn State University on May 6, receiving a bachelor of science degree in chemistry with minors in physics and military studies.

Before receiving his commission, Schweitzer was a midshipmen in NROTC at Penn State for four years. He most recently served as his battalion's operations officer for the spring 2017 semester.

He will report to Goose Creek, South Carolina in July to attend the U.S. Navy Nuclear Power School in preparation to become a submarine warfare officer.
