2019 general election: Board seats in Lehighton trigger spirited voting

Published November 06. 2019 01:20PM

Spirited voting — including write-in votes — took place in Tuesday’s general election in the Lehighton Area School District, where five four-year terms on the board of education were at stake.

There were actually six candidates whose names appeared on the ballots, including four who were on both the Democratic and Republican slates, while 2,281 write-in votes were also received.

The four top winners were the cross-filed candidates, including Wayne W. Wentz, who collected 2,650 votes; Larry E. Stern, 2,457; Rita L. Spinelli, 2,386; and Nathan R. Foeller, 2,343.

That left the fifth spot to be up for grabs between Republican Richard Beltz and Democrat Jack Finnegan. Beltz won that race by a vote of 2,055 to 1,905, however there were 2,281 write-in votes that could impact that race. Beltz and Finnegan were both nominated for a spot on the general election ballot by their respective party committees following the primary election, when Frank Ruch, since deceased, won a spot on both tickets.

The county’s board of elections will canvass the returns starting on Friday before certifying the winners.

We will all experience a moral victory for the Lehighton Area School district, regardless of the write-in outcomes.

With the addition of self proclaimed Christian business person, Nathan Foeller, the board now has a moral majority. The Democrats tried to leverage against the will of the people and install a plant opponent. The community came through. Thank you for sending us moral reinforcements.

It took close to six years to remove all the those that have been proven to act immorally when it came to budgets, taxes and proper governance. The tide has turned. Yeah tribe pride!

Nathan, as a moral business person will a add to the other moral officials already on the board. Transparency, review of the financial documents prior to approval and other moral blockages are now things of the past. The moral fights over creating a sustainable budget will be a given with moral business persons as elected directors. Bravo!

Eager to get Nathan installed as a director. Great days ahead for the Lehighton community. The last of the crew causing issues and lack of oversight problems are now officially out numbered by a new moral team.

Years of effort to create a moral board has been successful. Congratulations go to the Lehighton community. Tribe Pride is now a community wide benefit.

Sincerely,

Citizen David F. Bradley Sr.
Mr Bradley, You are a delusional narcissistic person with no morals. Get off your high horse and quit your nonsense! Your Build a circus dream team failed and curtailed your dreams of shutting down the district. Take your anti government school trash to another district.
I am very happy that we have finally defeated the many previous directors that were found to create immoral actions of the government. The old board raised taxes with a surplus, raised the budgets without proper oversight and created a blockade against transparency, those days have ended. If you remember, in some extreme cases those past immoral directors silenced the community, they decided not to host a referendum vote on construction projects, and they no longer have the power to tax, or take illogical actions of the government.

We now have a majority of board members that habitually act in a moral and upstanding fashion. They are eager to listen to the people and report to the people. Already in the Policy Committee meeting, a new Parent Complaint policy will be adopted. The board has officially been flipped. The community now has five people believing in a government of, by and for the people. The four remaining directors that rubber-stamp the administration without proper review are outnumbered by moral individuals. I expect them to resign, however, either way, we have a moral board in the Lehighton Area School District. The new board has individuals with business backgrounds, engineering backgrounds, and they are focused on the responsibility to tell the people the truth about the inner workings of their public, government-run educational institutions.

PSP,

I too own a pinstripe suit and wear an eyepatch on occasion. Truly, we live in a small world.

Build a Circus was a Duerst thing, and shutting down the district is nonsense. Educated people support the removal of Common Core, and implementation of school choice so parents are given the local control. But, not one would shut down the schools and facilities we all paid for. Well, except those that actually shut down some schools and sold off our local, safe, debt-free elementary schools. I guess they would be evil school closers. They sold some of those schools to private educational corporations or entities that don't hire union staff. Sounds like you have failed to see the big picture. So, I am a bit confused by your statement on 'delusional'.

Citizen David F. Bradley, Sr.
Victory!

God Bless America and the installation of a government of, by and for the people.

Sincerely,

Director David F. Bradley Sr.
The election was both spirited and exciting! Nathan Foeller will be an excellent addition to the Board. His business acumen and his Christian principles will serve the community well. I look forward to seeing us become a well-governed district where honesty and ethics are at the forefront.
