2019 general election: Grega wins matchup in Weatherly district

Published November 06. 2019 01:16PM

Gerard E. Grega, a Republican candidate, defeated Democrat Barbara Sipler in a head-to-head matchup to win a position on the Weatherly Area School District Board of Education during Tuesday’s general election.

The district voters were slated to fill five four-year terms, and with four candidates cross-filed, that left the Grega-Sipler matchup to determine the fifth seat. Grega won 835 to 580.

The cross-filed candidates won both Democratic and Republican nominations in the primary election. They included April Walters, who tallied 971 votes and finished in first place. Finishing second was William Knepper with 934 votes; while Matthew D. vonFrisch and Thomas Joseph Connors Jr. also won with 827 and 795 votes, respectively.

In the nearby Hazleton Area School District balloting, residents of Banks Township and Beaver Meadows Borough in Carbon County participated in that balloting. They cast their votes for the following: Ellen McBride, 306; Wister Yuhas Jr., 281; Jackie Scarcella, 280; Tony Bonomo, 260; John F. Busher, 223; and Robert J. Fiume, 218. Five four-year seats on the board of education were at stake.
