2019 primary election: Bowes announces candidacy for Lehighton Area school board

Barb Bowes announces her candidacy for Lehighton Area School Board director.

She was born and raised in Point Pleasant Beach, which is a very small resort town on the New Jersey Shore. The population there was 4,665 in 2010. She graduated from Point Pleasant Beach High School in 1975. She was raised with small-town values: Honesty, integrity and service to the community. Bowes lived in or within 10 miles of Point Pleasant Beach all her life until moving to Lehighton. In 1997 she moved back in with her ailing father and cared for him until his passing in 2003.

Bowes had always wanted to move to Pennsylvania, so when looking for property she found Lehighton very appealing due to its small-town atmosphere. She bought property here in 2003 and moved once it was ready in 2004. She has come to love this community and its people. Bowes is married (although separated for many years), the mother of two and grandmother to three grandsons.

Her daughter has a BA in anthropology with minors in history and geography, an MA in historical archaeology, MA in anthropology and is a Ph.D. candidate. She is employed full time in her field of study. Her son is an electrician. Her son-in-law is a professor of sociology with a BS in history, MS in education, MA in sociology and is a Ph.D. candidate in sociology; and her daughter-in-law is an art teacher.

“As you can see, I have a working knowledge of both ends of the educational spectrum,” she said.

Bowes sits on two boards, holding the president position on both. Both are volunteer positions. Bowes decided to run for school board director as she sees a need for those who can make common-sense decisions geared toward education that also is inclusive of the entire community, students, teachers, parents, administrators and constituents.

Listening and carefully considering the input from the community is paramount to an effective school board. One of the biggest issues facing any school board is understanding how the decisions they make today will affect the students and the entire community years and generations down the road.

Community,

Good afternoon. Here is a person that is not a rubber stamping incumbent. She will do.

Anyone willing to Honor their oath and not adictate their authority to the very people they were elected to oversee will do. Anyone will do.

My advice is to develop a very thick skin.

Challenging those in power has been proven to involve retaliation. They lie, endorse false testimony and hide from public review. Fear of losing the authority to exercise favoritism, cronyism and nepotism apparently creates hatred for transparency and those promoting legal transparency.

Good luck, Barb.

Sincerely,

Citizen David F. Bradley Sr.
