2019 primary election: Candidates line up for Schuylkill primary

The petition deadline for the primary was Tuesday. Here are the candidates for the Times News area of Schuylkill County:

Tamaqua Area School Board

Eleven candidates are vying for five seats on Tamaqua School Board. All have cross-filed. The candidates include three incumbents: President Larry Wittig, Treasurer Dan Schoener and Melanie Dillman. The other candidates are Justin Startzel, Thomas J. Bartasavage Jr., Trina Schellhammer, Stacey Betz, Liz Pinkey, Karen Tharp, Cheryl Tennant Humes and Jessica Ivey.

Incumbents Eileen Meiser and Wanda Zuber opted not to run again.

County seats

At the county level, Republican incumbents Chairman George Halcovage and Frank Staudenmeier and Democrat incumbent Gary Hess are running against Democrat Joe Palubinsky and Republican Melissa Strauch.

Incumbent county Treasurer Republican Linda Gallo Marchalk is running against Republican Kira Adams and Democrat Catherine Cat Mahon. County Controller Republican Christy Joy has no challengers.

For prothonotary, one Democrat and five Republicans are running. The Republican candidates include Albert Gricoski, currently first deputy for the office, and Bridget McGowan Miller, Dan Daub, Larry Padora and Jerry Labooty. Daub is the chairman of the Republican Party of Schuylkill County. The Democrat candidate is Mark Atkinson.

For the clerk of courts, incumbent Republican Maria Casey will be challenged by Melissa Santai Clarke. The Democrat candidate is Ronald Pellish.

For Register of Wills, incumbent Republican Theresa Santai Gaffney is running against Frank DeMarco. The Democrat candidate is Joe Ferraro.

Incumbent Republican Recorder of Deeds Ann Dudish has no challengers.

Incumbent Republican Coroner David Moylan is seeking re-election and Democrat Deb Detweiler is challenging him.

Local boards

In three local entities, the primary is already decided. In Rush Township, incumbent Republican Supervisor Shawn Gilbert has no challengers.

In East Brunswick Township, incumbent Republican Supervisor Thomas Strause has no challengers.

In Tamaqua, there are four candidates for four open seats for four-year terms on borough council: Thomas Cara, Brian Connely, Ronald Bowman and Robert Amentler. There is one candidate for one open seat for a two-year term, Mary Linkevich.

There are races for one open seat in both Schuylkill and West Penn townships for supervisor.

In Schuylkill Township, incumbent Republican Charles Fayash faces Republican Coleen Sadusky. Christine Verdier is unchallenged for a six-year term as township auditor. In West Penn Township, incumbent Republican Ted Bogosh is challenged by Republican Glenn Hummel.
