Carbon County District Attorney Jean A. Engler has announced she will be running for re-election on the Democratic ticket to her second full term. She has been District Attorney since August 2014 and is the first woman ever elected to that office in Carbon County.

In her 30-year tenure, first as an assistant and later as DA, Engler has successfully prosecuted thousands of cases, including first-degree murder trials. She has handled cases from arrest through appeals to the United States Supreme Court.

Some of Engler’s notable convictions include those of four defendants who murdered a rival drug dealer, a serial rapist who targeted elderly women in their homes, child predators, homicide cases with child victims, serial arson cases and drug-dealing cases involving corrupt organizations. During the last year, in addition to supervising over 1,600, she personally prosecuted two murder cases and two armed robbery cases, one of which resulted in conviction after a multiday jury trial.

DA Engler strives to find new tools to make our communities safer and to battle the substance abuse epidemic in the county, along with its effects on the criminal justice system. To that end, she serves on the Re-entry Coalition and is a team member of the county’s Veterans’ Court and Drug Court. She recently joined with Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro to introduce the Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion program.

She is the Coordinator of the Carbon County Drug Task Force and was responsible for implementation of the Drug Tipline, which has resulted in numerous referrals to police.

In the community, she is past chancellor of the Carbon County Bar Association and was an elected officer of the association for over 25 years. She was a mock trial coach for many years at Marian High School, her alma mater. She is a past president, member and Paul Harris Fellow of the Jim Thorpe Rotary Club.

Engler is the daughter of the late attorney W. Joseph Engler and Mary R. Engler. She is a graduate of Villanova University and Villanova School of Law and is a lifelong resident of Jim Thorpe.
