Activities announced for state parks
Activities have been announced for Tuscarora and Locust Lake state parks in Barnesville, Schuylkill County.
Conservation volunteer and avid birder David Kruel will lead a diurnal bird walk at 6:30 p.m. April 20 at Tuscarora State Park. The walk will begin at the Crow Trail parking lot. Following the walk, at 7:30 p.m., the group will go in search of owls and woodcocks. Participants must register by calling Robin Tracey at 570-467-2506. The walk is about 1 mile long and sponsored by the Schuylkill Conservancy. Those attending are encouraged to bring along binoculars. This is not a pet friendly walk. Shine only.
On Earth Day, April 21, at the Tuscarora visitor center participants will meet at 9:30 a.m. for activities that will range from litter pickup to trail maintenance and landscaping. Volunteers are asked to assist in this important activity. All tools and supplies will be provided. Pack a bag lunch and enjoy a beautiful day in the outdoors. Sign up by calling Tracey between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.
An early morning bird walk is planned at 7:30 a.m. for April 28. Conservation volunteer and avid birder John Domalakes will lead the walk which will begin in the Locust Lake visitor parking lot. Those attending are encouraged to bring along binoculars and a favorite field guide. Some binoculars will be available to borrow. Shine only and no pets are allowed. It is free and open to the public.
On May 3 at Tuscarora a naturalist from the park will lead a hike to Peddler’s Grave and the Greeny in a search of critters in the vernal pools. Meet at the Miner’s Memorial in Shenandoah at 10:30 a.m. and car pool to the site. The hike is moderate and 5 miles long. Bring a lunch. Pets are welcome but must be leashed at all times and get along with other pets and people. Shine only.
