The man who saved Coaldale’s Angela Triplex Theater died, and his family continued the vision he started.

In May, Mike Danchak passed away at age 69. He resurrected the theater on East Phillips Street. It first opened in the 1950s but fell into disrepair in later decades.

Danchak bought the property in 1993 and conducted extensive repairs. He relied upon his experience and connections from a long career working at movie theaters to rebuild the theater, which family members said was a childhood dream.

The theater reopened in 1997. The first screening was “Titanic,” and it sold out. He later added two additional screens himself.

Danchak’s wife, Deb, and son Michael Jr., are continuing to operate the Angela in his memory.

Also in Coaldale, St. Luke’s Miners campus expanded and modernized its emergency room.

The expansion included additional patient rooms with more equipment inside. A special isolated mental health area was added as the needs of certain patients have changed. Officials said the expansion project would continue into 2018.

The emergency department has seen 12-14 percent more patients each year since it was first certified as a trauma center in 2013, according to Dr. Adam Colombo, emergency department director.
