Annual indoor nativity display this weekend
St. John’s Lutheran Church, 319 South Ave., in the heights section of Jim Thorpe, will welcome the public to its 11th annual Creche/Nativity Display from noon until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The first Nativity display 11 years ago featured 125 articles depicting the blessed event of Jesus’ birth. Since that first year the event has grown to over 600 articles offered on display.
The annual display will feature Nativity items made from a variety of materials such as pewter, tin, cloth, ceramic, wood and beeswax and offer a wide variety of artistic creations.
The items range in age from more modern pieces to antiques. Some of the Nativities on display have figures that are barely an inch high, and others that are a couple of feet tall.
These items come from all over the world. Some are cherished family treasures and some are new, flea market finds.
Free transportation will again be available for people visiting the historic downtown of Jim Thorpe, with this weekend being the first of three Christmas weekend celebrations.
A bus will be running nonstop beginning at 1 p.m. each day with the last rotation to the church at 4:30 p.m.
People will be picked up near the Josiah White Park in the town square and a quick bus ride will take passengers to the church and return visitors back to the park area when they are finished visiting the display.
Light refreshments of punch and cookies will be served.
Tours of the beautiful Memorial Prayer Garden at the church will be offered as well as a cookie sale by the Reconstituted Willing Workers of St. John’s, who will be located on the main level of the church.
