Lehighton’s Hometown Heroes Banners project is in full swing.

The first two banners were placed Wednesday in the parking lot of the Shoemaker Haydt American Legion.

They are for Sgt. William M. Shoemaker and Walter E. Haydt, and were sponsored by The Zoo Health Club and Pizza Como USA.

The remaining 297 banners will be placed along Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard, as well as First, North, South, Mahoning and Ninth streets.

Kevin Long, commander of the Lehighton United Veterans Organization, said the banners are to honor Lehighton area men and women, both living and deceased, who have served and continue to serve our country.

Long said each banner costs $200.

He said anyone interested in a banner who didn’t have a chance to get one will be able to do so starting again in March.

Anyone with questions may contact Long at 610-377-9736 or 484-629-0013.
