Banners on Main Street

Published September 29. 2018 07:27AM

Alice Wanamaker and her chamber program should look into the vacant and blighted properties first, then put up new banners on Main Street! That’s like having a race and giving the checkered flag to someone before the race starts. You drive through Slatington and you cannot even get a breakfast meal.

The First Friday in Diner Boy’s facility was a failure, as was the farmers market. Stop trying to place big-city programs in a blighted town. In 1964 (the centennial) all store fronts were filled, clean and painted! Then came George Dillard and his HUD program. There is no pride on Main Street. Start with borough council to clean up Main Street!

The D&L Trailhead is a great start to revitalization, and the October 6th Beer Bash should help stir interest. I didn't know there even was a diner? It can't be very good.
Maybe Bubba Duane can organize one of those Redneck Festivals in the borough? It would be fitting.
As for blight? Reed was ordered to clean those up? I guess it pays to have friends in high places... Duane?
Perhaps Mr Scheffler should spend more time focused on contributing to his community with thoughtful ideas of progress and less time writing terribly composed letters to a newspaper. If you want to effect change, you create change. Go to the council and present ideas, give them actionable direction. I also fail to see how the Chamber replacing the old banners is an issue. As a resident of the town, wouldn't you want the town to be presentable and beautiful? I also find it odd that you don't know where to get a breakfast meal.... Ever hear of Donna's Café? How about that diner you mentioned, Charlotte Fay's? Perhaps you'd like to grab some breakfast at the Shack, but again, you didn't even know they served breakfast. You can even grab a delicious sandwich at Diggity Dogs at the trailhead. Many people do, it gets quite busy down there. Perhaps you were too busy writing complaint letters to notice. I was also unaware that farmers markets and community gatherings were "big city programs". I was always under the impression that those things were inherently small town. Afterall, there are many small town, out of the way places you can find farmers markets. Its almost like you are more concerned about complaining that you are with actually doing something. Shame on you for coming down on people who are trying. The local farmers that participated in the farmers market were trying to provide a wonderful service to our community. I enjoyed their efforts while it was there. The local business owners who got together to organize "First Fridays" were trying to create a forum for locals to experience the people and places in their own community. People like you, who would rather complain about it, are why it didn't last. You sat at home whining about how bad of an idea it was instead of going out there. Seeing the people and investing in your town. I would encourage you and everyone to support the efforts that these people and others have put into trying new things. There is a building support from trail-goers. The momentum our community has gained from the growth of the trail-head efforts is amazing. More and more people show up and use the facilities that have been provided through the efforts of organizations like the Chamber, D&L, and the local businesses. All of that started with an idea and a hope that it would catch on. If more people were like you and decided that it wasn't a good idea and were going to complain that its a bad idea to try new things, the success we are seeing now would have never happened. So perhaps, you should join the cause, get in there and contribute your own ideas, and maybe, one of your new ideas can be tried out and other people can complain about them too.
