Be a small piece of the solution

Published November 20. 2018 12:38PM

Dear Editor,

Did you ever hear of a county that thrives on tourism allowing an outside business to install 600-foot wind turbines throughout the horizon? Well, you are living in one: Carbon County. The Bethlehem Water Authority is pushing a plan to put 30 to 40 of them here. They say to generate power. I’d rather burn candles. They don’t want to see them in Lehigh County so they generally put them in an area where people don’t care. I think they got us figured out. No one seems to care, not our commissioners, not the Pocono bureau of tourism, and apparently not even the locals.

People say things like you can’t fight city hall. Do tourists show up to see wind turbines these days? When the tourism dollars are in decline and you see the ugly fans sticking up everywhere you drive in the county, it will be way too late to react. You can be a small piece of the solution or a small piece of the problem.

Send a few bucks or loose change from your car seat to an organization called “SOAR.” The local chapter is in the Bear Creek Lakes area of Jim Thorpe. They are fighting against it with their own funds, from bake sales, yard sales, and wine and cheese parties, and they are doing a valiant job. The wind turbines are literally planned for their backyards, but if you live in Carbon County they will be “in your grill” wherever you go. Do you care? The Bethlehem Water Authority is pretty sure you don’t. “SOAR” stands for Save Our Allegheny Ridges.
