Bridge replacements for Tremont
Schuylkill County will use a $1.5 million Multimodal Transportation Fund grant to replace two county bridges in Tremont borough.
During a workshop meeting Wednesday, County Engineer Lisa Mahall told the commissioners that the bridges are on Maple and Line streets in the borough. The grant would provide up to 70 percent, with the county’s match 30 percent. The county match would come from liquid fuels money over several years, Mahall said.
One of the bridges has a center pier, which will be removed in the new design.
Mahall said the center pier contributed to flooding problems in the borough, as debris got stuck against it and blocked the flow of water.
Mahall is currently compiling a list of all 62 county bridges, noting past repair work and any needs for future work.
Mahall also presented information about the county’s annual fall cleanup, from Sept. 9 to 21, when residents can get rid of tires, appliances and bulky items. Electronics will not be accepted. The Department of Environmental Protection reimburses the county up to 50 percent for the cost of the cleanup. One of the locations will be the Tamaqua Transfer Station.
In a related matter, the county is advertising for bids for the waste tire collection and recycling. Bids will be accepted in the controller’s office until 3 p.m. July 29, with tentative award date Aug. 14.
