Bulldogs get big baseball victory

Northern Lehigh stunned Northwestern in a baseball game over the weekend.

BASEBALL

No. Lehigh-Northwestern

Gio Colon pitched a four-hitter Sunday to help Northern Lehigh upset Northwestern, 5-2, in a Colonial League contest.

The game was played at PNC park in Moosic, home of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

Colon walked three and struck out two in his seven innings of work.

The Bulldogs (3-8; 3-7), who scored all five of their runs in the fourth inning, received a hit and RBI from Brandon Hess, Chase Misera, and Zach Long.

Trevor Schreiner had a triple and run scored for the Tigers (10-3; 9-3).

Catasauqua-Lehighton

Lehighton’s offense proved to be too strong, as it defeated non-league opponent Catasauqua 11-1 in five innings.

Zach Crum led the Indians (5-5) with a single, double, triple, two runs scored, and an RBI. Logan Pagotto added a pair of hits, an RBI and run scored.

The tandem of Avery Deem and Mike Bozilesky combined on a two-hitter.

Nativity-Marian

Max Nolter collected four hits, two of them doubles, as Marian downed Nativity in a non-league game, 8-3.

The contest began Tuesday, but was suspended due to snow squalls.

Brandon Cann had three hits, including a double, while Ryan Cappel and Matt Dougherty both added a pair of hits for the Colts (7-3).

Nativity received two hits from Jake Ferhat.

Jim Thorpe-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain built an early lead and cruised to a 9-2 Schuylkill League win over Jim Thorpe.

Nate Nabholz collected three hits, two of them doubles, and knocked in a pair of runs for the Eagles. Kaleb Sophy scattered three hits for the mound win.

The Olympians are now 2-10 overall and 1-4 in the league.

Pleasant Vy.-Stroudsburg

Owen Christy had two hits and knocked in two runs to help Stroudsburg gain a 12-5 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.

The game was played at Coca-Cola Park, home of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

For Pleasant Valley (6-4), James Gehr had two hits and scored a run. Brandon Ratti added a hit and two RBIs while Danny McEvoy had a single and scored twice.

Moravian A.-Northwestern

Northwestern rolled to a 12-2 Colonial League win over Moravian Academy.

Derek Holmes had two triples and three RBIs for the Tigers, while Trevor Schreiner hit a homer and drove in three. Rafe Perich also knocked in three runs and had a double, and Jake Haas added a triple and an RBI.

Noah Russo gained the pitching win, striking out six.

Panther Valley rolled to a 17-8 non-league win over Salem Christian.

Mahanoy Area-Tamaqua

Tamaqua posted another decisive win, beating Mahanoy Area, 11-1, in a non-league game.

Kaitlyn Stauffenberg led the Blue Raiders (9-1) with a pair of home runs and five RBIs. Jen Frederickson added two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored; Miranda Chinchar had a double, walked twice and scored twice; and Brooke Zellner had a hit, an RBI, and two runs scored.

Jada Schellhammer added another pitching gem for Tamaqua, tossing a one-hitter and striking out nine.

Weatherly split a doubleheader with Freeland MMI, as it dropped a 17-5 decision in the opener, before turning things around for a 18-12 win in its second game.

Alexis Colecio and Kelly Royer both had a double and single in the second game to lead the Wreckers to redemption. The Wreckers (3-5) actually led 11-0 in the game, before the Preppers mounted a comeback.

The Bears (12-5) continued to get impressive production from their singles players as Josh Schaffner, Jake Ammermann and Najja Francis all posted straight set victories, dropping a total of just six games in the three matches.
