Cappel, Conde, Zuber to be honored
Schuylkill Chapter 25 of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame will honor 14 student athletes this year.
The banquet is scheduled for April 8 at 5 p.m. at Hillcrest Hall in Minersville.
Among the honorees are Ryan Cappel of Marian, David Conde of Panther Valley, and Thad Zuber of Tamaqua.
Following are bios of the local student/athletes:
Ryan Cappel, Marian
Cappel is a 5-10, 185-pound, two-year starter at running back and safety/linebacker. He was also team captain.
All of Cappel’s football accomplishments were a remarkable feat considering he suffered a near fatal auto accident in 2016, and had to recover from serious leg and internal injuries.
Cappel is in his senior year of sports eligibility but will not graduate until 2019, when he plans to attend West Point Military Academy.
The son of Dale & Cindy Cappel of Orwigsburg, Ryan was also the winning pitcher for the Colts in the District 11 Class 2A baseball championship game last spring.
David Conde, Panther Valley
Conde is a 5-6, 145-pound athlete who played outside linebacker and special teams for the Panthers. He was a hard-working, dedicated leader on the field for first-year coach Scott Price.
Conde earned distinguished honors taking advanced courses in algebra, literature, biology, and computer science.
The son of Rosella Durso and Vito Durso, he has a 95 GPA and has been accepted to Wilkes and East Stroudsburg Universities.
He plans to major in criminology.
Thad Zuber, Tamaqua
Zuber is a 6-0, 178-pound, four-year starter and letterman who played quarterback, wide receiver, linebacker, and defensive back for the Blue Raiders. As a senior, Zuber was named to the Lehighton Times News, Hazleton Standard Speaker, and Pottsville Republican All-Star teams. Zuber had over 2,900 career passing yards, and 24 career passing touchdowns.
Zuber is also an outstanding basketball and baseball player, participating four years in both sports.
He is a member of the math, English, science, and Spanish Honor Societies, Zuber is ranked fifth in a class of 158, and takes advanced placement courses in chemistry, calculus, physics, European history, and Spanish.
The son of Steve and Wanda Zuber of Tamaqua, he has been accepted to Ursinus College, Worcester Polytechnical Institute, and Case Western Reserve.
He plans to pursue a degree in chemical engineering.
