Carbon County’s Animal Shelter is getting a full makeover.

Last week, Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard provided an update on the makeover project at the county-owned shelter.

He said that all of the LED lighting has been installed inside and outside the building, all floors in the kennel area have been refinished and 16 new kennel gates have been installed as part of the project.

New tile floors in various areas of the shelter, a bathroom update and a wash bay in the puppy room will be completed in the near future.

Gerhard thanked everyone who has donated to the shelter over the years to help make things like this overhaul possible.

Last year, the county received more than $100,000 from the estates of two former area residents who passed away.

The late Paul W. Christman left the shelter $98,567.89, while the late Carol E. Kuehner bequeathed $12,088.

The money was used on the updates, as well as to continue caring for the dogs.

Gerhard also reported that there were 12 adoptions in April.

The shelter operates primarily on donations from the community and is led by Tom Connors, who serves as the director, as well as a handful of part-timers and volunteers.
