Published January 22. 2020 11:20AM

Two defendants in pending criminal cases were placed in Carbon County’s Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program for first-time offenders on Monday by Judge Joseph J. Matika.

If a person successfully completes all conditions of the program, their record is wiped clean. However, if they fail to complete it, or are revoked from it, then they would face trial on all pending charges. A person does not admit guilt in entering the program.

The two were placed for six months.

William P. Alicea, 33, of Yonkers, New York, was placed on a charge of possession of a small amount of marijuana. He was arrested on July 20, 2019, by state police at Lehighton along Route 209 at Lakeview Road, in Towamensing Township, following a traffic stop.

He was assessed $450 for the cost of the program and ordered to render 25 hours of community service.

Mahasin A. Pegeise, 39, of Albrightsville, was placed on a charge of bad checks. She was arrested on Feb. 22, 2019, by Jim Thorpe police for issuing a bad check to the office of District Judge Eric M. Schrantz.

She was assessed $650 and ordered the render 25 hours of community service and make restitution of $419.21 to the DJ office. It was noted the restitution has already been paid.

Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while in the program.
