Carbon County court — DUI

Five defendants who previously pleaded guilty to driving under the influence charges were sentenced on Friday in Carbon County court.

Judge Joseph J. Matika imposed sentences on the following:

Jedidiah Keith Scorzeili, 21, of Rehrersburg, Berks County, was sentenced on three DUI charges in separate incidents.

He was arrested on the first incident on Oct. 3, 2015, by state police at Lehighton, on Feb. 2 and Aug. 21, 2016, both by Kidder Township. In all three arrests, tests revealed the presence of a controlled substance.

Scorzelli told the court after his last arrest, which he said was “rock bottom” for him, he entered long-term inpatient rehabilitation facilities.

He told the court, “I’m thankful for where I am today. Thankful for everything, for myself and my family.”

Defense Attorney Mark Combi said that Scorzelli did so well in the rehab program that he stayed on as a counselor and continues in that position.

Matika congratulated Scorzelli for what he had done.

Matika sentenced Scorzelli on the first case to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000 and one-year license suspension; second case, six to 24 months in jail, a fine of $1,500, and 18-month license suspension; on the third case, six to 24 months in jail, a fine of $1,500 and another 18-month suspension. The three jail terms run concurrently. The jail terms will be followed by three years of probation.

Zero tolerance was imposed on drug or alcohol use and he must render 100 hours of community service. He was given credit for 416 days spent in rehab inpatient programs and paroled.

Analin Adames, 26, of West Hazleton, was sentenced to serve 30 days in prison followed by 24 months in the county’s Intermediate Punishment Program with the first 60 days on electronic monitoring, followed by three years of probation. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $1,500, 18-month license suspension, zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use and render a total of 100 hours of community service.

He will begin the jail term on April 2 at 10 a.m. and serve it on consecutive two-day weekends.

Jose A. Minyetty, 31, of McAdoo, was sentenced to serve 30 to 60 days in jail on a driving under suspension — DUI related charge. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $500 and one-year license suspension. He must serve the full 60 days. On a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia, he was placed on probation for a year and must render 50 hours of community service. The terms run concurrently.

He was arrested on Oct. 3, 2017, by Weatherly police along East Main Street.

He begins the jail term at 9 a.m. on March 31 and will serve it on consecutive two-day periods.

Yoe Colon Peguero, 24, of Hazleton, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension and render 50 hours of community service.

On a charge of firearms not to be carried without a license, he was placed on probation for a year concurrent with the DUI count.

He was arrested on April 22, 2015, along Berwick Street by Beaver Meadows police. He was previously placed in the county’s Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program but was revoked from it for violating conditions.

He was given credit for nine days spent in jail on the charges and paroled.

Michael Thomas Unger, 44, of Effort, was sentenced to serve three to 24 months in prison, a fine of $500 and one-year license suspension. On a charge of driving under suspension, DUI related, he was sentenced to serve 45 to 90 days in jail (must serve the full 90 days) and a fine of $500. The jail terms run concurrently.

He arrested on Nov. 21, 2016, along Route 940 by Kidder Township police. He refused a test.

He was given credit for 148 days spent in prison on the charges and paroled.

Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000, a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and follow any recommendation of their drug and alcohol evaluation.
