Prothonotary’s report

A total of 521 cases were started in January in the office of Carbon County Prothonotary Kayla Semmel, according to a monthly statistical report released by the officeholder.

A breakdown of cases is as follows: civil actions, 20; custody complaints, 7; district justice appeals, 9; divorce complaints, 8; complaint in ejectment, 3; license appeals, 5; mortgage foreclosure complaints, 12; protection from abuse petitions, 28; quite title, 4; aud/fin/reports, 2; CT appointment, 5; judgments, 274; miscellaneous case, 7; PFSVI, 2; modification of custody, 15; stipulation/waiver of leins 1; and writs of executions, 18. The office staff also processed 106 applications for U.S. passports and provided assistance to the public with 57 passport renewal applications.

Semmel’s financial report for January shows $30,202.15 was generated as follows: prothonotary’s fees, $25,806.37; interest income, $3.67; custody/divorce fees, $760; PFA Surcharge, Sheriff, $25; PFA Surcharge, Courts, $25; data processing fees, $3,074.60; stenographer fees, $610; and remote access fund for remote access fees, $3,000.

The prothonotary also remitted $3,192.83 to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Revenue, representing state fees collected locally, and $95.20 to the Administrative Offices of the Pennsylvania Courts, this being surcharges on new custody cases in accordance with Act 119 of 1996. Another $1,040.65 was deposited in the Prothonotary’s Automation Fund for future use in automating the office.

Loan default

First Commonwealth Federal Credit Union, 257 Brodhead Road, Bethlehem, filed a civil action against Matthew Williams Brooks, 921 Edgemont Ave., Palmerton, alleging he defaulted on a motor vehicle installment sale contract. Sought is $8,958.24 plus interest, costs and fees.

Credit defaults

The following actions were filed by credit card companies, or their collection agencies, for alleged defaults on credit card/loan accounts.

Bank of America, Charlotte, North Carolina, filed the following actions: Luke Timmons, 234 Fourth St., Weatherly, seeking $12,442.43; and Susan K. Erdman, 223 Quakake Road, Weatherly, seeking $4,521.95.

Discover Bank, Bensalem, filed an action against Richard Taylor, 707 Oak Grove Drive, Lehighton, seeking $22,597.90.

Midland Funding, Eatontown, New Jersey, filed the following actions: Colleen Scherer, 95 North Ave., Jim Thorpe, seeking $1,924.06; and Robert Farrell, 225 Center St., Lehighton, seeking $1,157.57.

Mortgage foreclosure

The following action was filed as a mortgage foreclosure for alleged default on a loan.

TD Bank, c/o 2035 Limestone Road, Wilmington, Delaware, filed an action against Michael and Joanne F. Petrin, 1640 Route 534, Albrightsville, over property at that address. Sought is $503,361.75 and continuing interest.
