Carbon designated a StormReady county
Carbon County has been named a StormReady county by the National Weather Service.
The designation is effective until May 31, 2021.
Mark Nalesnik, director of the Carbon County Emergency Management Agency, said that to receive this distinction, Carbon had to institute a number of severe weather preparedness measures like installing NOAA weather radios in the emergency operations center and county commissioners’ office.
“The designation required planning and preparedness for severe weather events, which results in better response capabilities to these events,” he said. “Planning and preparedness for any emergency is the key to success.”
StormReady is a National Weather Service program that highlights the need for increased community awareness to help the chances for lowering the loss of property and lives during extreme weather events, the letter to Nalesnik said.
“StormReady encourages communities to take a proactive approach to improving local hazardous weather operations and public awareness.”
The National Weather Service approved Carbon County’s actions to receive the StormReady designation on May 31, stating that officials fulfilled the criteria needed to provide for its citizens during weather events.
