Carbon man placed in drug program

A Carbon County man who admitted to a drug addiction problem, was placed in a special program in the state prison system on Friday by a county judge.

Jonathan O’Gurek, 34, of Summit Hill, was placed in the state’s Intermediate Punishment program by Judge Joseph J. Matika.

O’Gurek, who is currently an inmate at the state correctional institution at Camp Hill, Dauphin County, was placed in the program for two years. The program includes about seven months in prison followed by a period of time in a intensive drug rehabilitation program followed by a period of time at a halfway house.

O’Gurek previously pleaded to charges of possession of a controlled substance, criminal use of a communication facility, driving under the influence of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

O’Gurek’s sentencing proceeding was done via video from the SCI Camp Hill. He told Matika that the state program has “really been a help.” He said he was thankful to be in the program.

Matika also conducted a parole revocation proceeding in which he revoked the parole of O’Gurek in another case and imposed the same sentence of state IP.

On the DUI count he was ordered to pay a fine of $2,500 and have his license suspended for 18 months. He must also supply a DNA sample, when paroled render 100 hours of community service, pay fines totaling $300 on two summary offenses and pay court costs of about $1,000.
