Carbon man sentenced to state prison for burglary, other counts
A Carbon County man was sentenced to a state prison term on Friday on five criminal counts, including burglaries, to which he previously entered guilty pleas.
Steven P. Brownmiller, 56, of Lehighton, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve a total of 18 to 60 months in a state correctional institution on two counts of burglary, criminal trespass, resisting arrest and receiving stolen property.
Brownmiller admitted to a long-term drug addiction problem. It was noted his crimes were committed while struggling with drugs. He said he stole to get money to feed his habit.
Matika told him the state system was the best place for him to address his problem as they have a new drug treatment program in place.
Brownmiller told the court, “I really hope I can get into the program. I really need it.”
Matika responded, “I guess it’s what you make of it. This is the time to make it work.”
In addition to the jail term, Matika ordered Brownmiller to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, render a total of 150 hours of community service when paroled, make total restitution to the victims of $1,795.69, supply a DNA sample and pay court costs of about $1,000.
He was given credit for a total of 336 days already served on the charges.
