Celebrating 100 years of women’s right to vote
In honor of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women in the United States the right to vote, Carbon County Democrats will be focusing an effort to register women to vote.
Linda Christman, President of Carbon County Democrats for Progress said, “Our slogan is ‘100 Years/100 Percent,’ which means we want every woman that is eligible to vote. We can’t forget that suffragettes like Alice Paul literally risked their lives to obtain our right to vote.”
Volunteers will be setting up tables at grocery stores to make registration easy, and will be strictly nonpartisan and will register voters of any party or independents.
Volunteers will also be ready to sign up voters for the new “vote by mail” option, which is now legal in Pennsylvania.
Voters registered by April 13 will be eligible to vote in the party primaries.
April 28 is the day of the general primary election, and mail-in ballots may be submitted until 8 p.m. on Election Day.
Volunteers will be at the Jim Thorpe Market in Jim Thorpe today; at Redner’s Market in Nesquehoning on Thursday, and at Country Harvest in Palmerton on Sunday, as well as Feb. 20.
Registration will begin at 10 a.m. each day.
Volunteers will be dressed in period costume and wearing “Votes for Women, 1920 to 2020” sashes.
