Chili and boilo contest set in Tamaqua

There’s not much better than chili and boilo during the winter.
Come grab a taste of Schuylkill County at the eighth annual Coming Together for a Cause Chili & Boilo Cook-Off at the East End Fire Company in Tamaqua on Saturday.
“The fellas from the East End and American Hose got together and said why can’t we do something?” Art Connely said. “One of the organizers is a cancer survivor, and my dad is a cancer survivor. So we said we’d give it a shot. Over the seven years we’ve done it, we’ve raised over $30,000 for the Tamaqua/Carbon Cancer Society.”
Prizes will be awarded for the best traditional and specialty recipes. There is a $20 registration fee, which will begin at 11 a.m. The tasting is from 1-5 p.m. and will cost $10. Connely said there has been mouthwatering specialty entries such as pumpkin or Italian chili in the past.
“Years ago there was competition between the fire companies, that’s why the slogan is ‘Coming together for the cause,’ ” Connely said. “We always had good friendly competition.”
In addition to the tasting, there will be roughly 40 or 50 door prizes up for grabs. A custom cornhole set will also be taken home by a lucky raffle winner.
“We have good support from the businesses in the area,” Connely said. “Anybody that thinks they make a good boilo or chili, come on and enter it. Once somebody comes once, they usually want to come back.”
