Christy set for trial next week in Carbon burglary

Shawn Christy, 27, of McAdoo, who eluded police for months after he was charged with threatening the life of President Donald Trump and Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli, will go on trial next week in Carbon County on burglary and related counts for crimes he allegedly committed while on the run.

Christy is scheduled to pick a jury on Monday, with the trial to start later in the week before Judge Joseph J. Matika. Christy will represent himself at the trial. Matika appointed attorney Andrew Bench, of the public defender’s office, to be standby counsel and assist Christy.

Christy will face charges of burglary, criminal trespass, criminal attempt, theft and criminal mischief in an incident on Aug. 23, 2018. State police at Hazleton charged Christy with breaking into a Packer Township building.

Christy has two other pending criminal cases in Carbon County which are scheduled for trial at later dates.

Christy was in custody at the Lackawanna County prison on federal charges. He was recently transferred to the Carbon County prison in Nesquehoning for the trial.

He was on the run for several months and accused of various break-ins in Schuylkill and Luzerne counties as well as Carbon.

He was finally captured on Sept. 20, 2018, in Mifflin Township, Ohio, by local law enforcement and U.S. Marshals Service officers.

The Carbon trial is expected to last one day.
