Colts, Raiders pick up wins
Seven area wrestlers advanced to the semifinals in holiday tournament action on Thursday.
Panther Valley placed three wrestlers in the semis while Lehighton and Northwestern had two wrestlers apiece advance in their respective tournaments.
WRESTLING
Lehighton at
Christmas City Tournament
Lehighton’s Kevin Madea and Nate Kemmerer advanced to the semifinals at the Tony Iasiello Christmas City Tournament.
Madea, the fifth seed at 120 pounds, pinned No. 4 Joey Fitts of Roman Catholic High School in 1:47 to advance. Madea will face top seed Kody Evans of Susquehanna Township in the semis.
Kemmerer breezed into the semifinals by pinning East Stroudsburg South’s Sal Seccafico in 2:47 in his 126-pound quarterfinal match. Kemmerer, the No. 3 seed, will face second seed Shayne VanNess of Blair Academy in the semis.
In addition to Madea and Kemmerer, Mason Ferguson (106), Steven Fritzinger (113), Lucas Sangiuliano (132), Chris Whiteman (145), Tyler Schock (152), Richard Fronheiser (160), Jack Zimmerman (195) and Brett Gasker (220) are still alive in the consolation bracket.
Bethlehem Catholic leads the team standings with 115 points. Lehighton is seventh out of 16 teams with 43.5 points.
Panther Valley at
Windsor Christmas Tournament
Panther Valley’s Derek Beckham, Tanner Kennedy and Hunter Kennedy moved on to the semifinals at the Windsor City Christmas Tournament.
After picking up a 10-6 decision over Colonie’s Ryan Stein in the first round, Beckham made it to the semis in dramatic fashion, with a 7-6 (UTB) win over Mike Sabella of Mount Sinai in the quarters.
Hunter Kennedy rolled in his first match, picking up a 13-2 major decision over Indian River’s Chase Lynch before grabbing a 10-7 decision over SVEC’s Grady Alpert.
Tanner Kennedy pinned Colonie’s Logan Stark in 3:12 in the first round and picked up a 9-0 major decision over Saratoga Springs’ Ryan DiGuiseppe to punch his ticket to the semis.
Colby Newton is still alive in the consolation bracket for the Panthers.
Northwestern, Pleasant Valley at Bethlehem Holiday Classic
Northwestern’s Jackson Bernhard and Caleb Clymer advanced to the semifinals at the Bethlehem Holiday Classic.
Bernhard breezed into the semis with three impressive wins. The senior opened with a 17-5 major decision over Pennridge’s Christia Perrine before pinning John Kaintz (1:52) and Saucon Valley’s Thomas Spirk (2:54) to reach the semis.
Clymer received a bye in the first two rounds, and pinned Northampton’s Riley Gallagher in 0:15 before earning a 3-0 decision over Phillipsburg’s Lance Wissing in the quarters.
Liberty leads the team standings with 111 points.
Northwestern is 14th out of 30 teams with 65 points.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Schuylkill Haven-Tamaqua
Tamaqua jumped on Schuylkill Haven early and cruised to a 77-58 nonleague win.
Thad Zuber scored 21 points for the Blue Raiders (8-1, 2-0), who led 20-5 after the first quarter. Brayden Knoblauch and Lucas Gregoire added 13 points apiece.

Noah Stauffer scored 18 points for the Colts (3-3), who trailed 29-23 at halftime. Chris Ritsick added 17 points, while Jarred Maylath tallied 14 and Tyler Fritz recorded 12.
