Dam release schedule announced

Published July 27. 2019 07:15AM

Rainfall totals this summer have been high enough to enable Francis E. Walter Dam to schedule additional dam releases for white water and fishing.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District announced on Friday that the dam, located along the Lehigh River just upstream of Carbon County, will hold white water releases on Aug. 24-25, and Aug. 31-Sept. 1.

During the scheduled white water releases, the dam will release 650-850 cubic feet per second on top of the amount of water flowing into the reservoir.

The dam will also hold smaller releases to enhance fishing conditions on all other days through Aug. 16. During the fishery enhancement releases, the dam will release 100 cfs on top of the amount flowing into the reservoir.

The Army Corps schedules dam releases if the water level in the reservoir is high enough. Additional releases will be announced if they are approved. For more information, visit https://www.nap.usace.army.mil/Missions/Civil-Works/Francis-E-Walter-Dam.
