June 4, 1949 — Walter “Pickles” O’Gurek captures three events to help Summit Hill take first place at the annual Carbon County track and field meet, held at the Ginder Stadium. O’Gurek wins the high jump, clearing 5-9, takes the broad jump, with a leap of 19-8 1/4, and claims the pole vault, by clearing 11-3. The Hillers, coached by Vernon Hontz, total four other firsts, coming from Danny Frantz (440), Tom Ronemus (880), Bobby Thomas (mile) and the mile relay team. Lansford, who takes second in the team standings, receives four overall firsts, two from Richard Heffelfinger (100, 220).
