March 10, 2000 — Tamaqua’s Joelle Evanousky becomes the first-ever Schuylkill League girls swimmer to earn a state medal when she captures a sixth-place finish in the 50 freestyle at the PIAA championships at Penn State. Evanousky, a senior, records a time of 25.37 in the finals. She also teams with Amy Connely, Erin Lehatto and Randi Wagner for a 19th-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The Tamaqua boys also send a relay team to states, as the foursome of Mike Runk, Nick Weschler, Nick Emerich and Keith Davis place 22nd in the 200 medley relay.
