A dedication ceremony for a rebuilt veterans memorial in Franklin Township will be held on Sunday.

Former students of the Franklin Elementary School, KIA relatives, and the Franklin Township Lions Club will conduct the dedication of the Franklin Township KIA Memorial at 1 p.m. at Phifer’s Ice Dam Pavilion.

The event will begin with a salute by the United Veterans Organization, and will include special music and entertainment by The Perseverance Jazz Band from 1-3 p.m., and the Midnight Special Band from 5-8 p.m.

Admission is free, and the Lions Club kitchen will be open all day for food and refreshments. Visitors are asked to bring lawn chairs.

After the Franklin Elementary School closed, they decided to give the monument to the township, according to Shirley Gross, secretary of the Franklin Township Lions Club.

“The school closed, the monument just sat there, it was deteriorating,” Gross said. “I just thought it would be a good project for the Lions Club to rebuild it.”

Gross said that due to the age of the monument, all they could reuse were the name plaques, so it was decided to rebuild a new monument.

“There was no salvaging anything, only the metal plaques, and we got them repolished,” she said. “They had all the names of the 30 veterans from Franklin Township on there.”

Gross said Tim Seltzer designed and built the monument, which is made of field stone.

“It was rebuilt from scratch,” she said. “It is absolutely beautiful.”

Gross said the monument has been relocated to the Phifer’s Ice Dam Park pavilion to pay homage to the veterans who were killed in action that were from Franklin Township.

“So we figured it should stay in Franklin Township,” she said. “And the fact that the Lions Club maintains everything, (we figured) we would take it upon ourselves as part of our project.”
