Democrats debate for 9th district seat

The Eastern Schuylkill Democratic Club will sponsor a debate between the three Democratic candidates running for the newly created 9th Congressional seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. The debate will be held on Monday at the Tamaqua Elks building.

The candidates include Laura Quick, Gary Wegman and Denny Wolff.

Quick is a single mother who lives in Palmyra, Lebanon County.

A native of Lebanon County, Quick is currently employed by UPS.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Despite putting her community activism to the side while raising her son, she continued to be interested in helping others, becoming a member of the Women’s Leadership Network of the United Way of the Capitol Region.

A member of the inaugural class of Emerge PA, she has also served as an organizer for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and co-founded the Mentors 2 Heroes program.

Wegman hails from Reading, Berks County, where he has an active dental practice.

Serving on the Reading Redevelopment Authority and the Reading Parking Authority, he was also instrumental in bringing the Mission of Mercy free dental program to the City of Reading;

Wolff is a fifth generation farmer from Millville, Columbia County.

He served as Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Agriculture for six years after being appointed in 2003. He has also served on the state’s Economic Development and Homeland Security Committees, the Conservation Commission and the Farmland Preservation Board.

A member of the Penn State University board of trustees, he founded Camp Victory for special needs children.

The debate will begin at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the public. The Elks is located at 201 W. Broad St., Tamaqua, but please use the Nescopec Street side entrance.

The ESDC will hold its regular monthly meeting immediately following the debate.
