Dispose of leftover prescription drugs on April 28
Got prescription pills that you are no longer taking?
Here’s a chance to safely dispose of those bottles of pills that have been hiding in your medicine cabinet.
April 28 is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., participating police departments, hospitals and other organizations like the Carbon County Opiate Task Force will be accepting the unwanted medications for safe disposal in the hopes of curbing some of the growing drug epidemic plaguing the nation.
“Drug Take Back Days give the public the option to dispose of unused prescriptions that could land in the hands of those with substance abuse issues and our youth,” said Jamie Drake, executive director for the Carbon-Monroe-Pike Drug and Alcohol Commission.
In addition to the participating police departments, who will accept medications during the event, a new drop-off location at Beltzville State Park has been set up that day by the Carbon County Opiate Task Force.
“The event at Beltzville will provide additional locations to dispose of unused medications in Carbon County as well as how to get help if you or a family member/friend has an issue with substance abuse,” Drake said.
During the last Drug Take Back Day, held on Oct. 28, a total of 36,909 pounds of prescription medications were collected in Pennsylvania
Created by the Drug Enforcement Administration in 2010, the Drug Take Back initiative is an effort to prevent medication abuse and rid homes of unwanted and unnecessary prescription drugs.
With collections taking place twice a year, more than 9 million pounds of prescription medication have been removed from circulation so far.
