Don’t ignore effect of infrasound

Published August 29. 2019 12:30PM

In a recent letter to the Times News (July 25, 2019), a representative of Broad Mountain Wind states that noise levels for the project are expected to be “very low,” and in some locations the proposed wind turbines will be inaudible most of the time. The letter conveniently leaves out any mention of infrasound.

There is no question that industrial wind turbines generate low frequency sound that is below the threshold of human hearing (20HZ), which is produced by the movement of the blades through the air as well as from the turbine machinery. Infrasound is perceived by humans as a vibration, often accompanied by feelings of pressure in the eardrums and ringing in the ears (tinnitus).

Symptoms of exposure to infrasound include headaches, sleep problems, concentration or memory problems, disequilibrium, dizziness and nausea. These symptoms experienced daily over a long period can have a profound impact on a person’s quality of life. Infrasound cannot be attenuated by means of physical barriers. The perception of infrasound is the same whether one is inside a home with doors and windows closed or out in the open.

Ear plugs, headphones, etc. are useless against infrasound. Long-term exposure to infrasound can damage the inner ear and lead to hearing loss. With insufficient data on turbine-induced infrasound, residents and stakeholders are lacking key information necessary for making an informed decision about this project.

Juliet,
This sound argument may be moot. There isn't a legislator who'll hear my gripe over these scooter vermin revving big bore Harley's with Straight Pipes.

Bull crap. Infrasound is always present around us caused by high tension wires, cars, wind, insects, surf, etc etc. If there was any truth in your premise there would be mass health issues in all the european cities that have had wind farms for decades...yet data tells us they are healthier and live longer than US citizens. This is a myth

The writer did not use the words "Health Issue". The writer leans more toward stress and annoyance. Sort of like when your comment hits that certain "Brown Note".
Anyway, it's important that we all remember, word definitions change (a progressive thing).
Keeping that in mind, let's look at your injected word... "Health".
According to World Health Organisation, it now represents a state of complete physical, mental and social well being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Look it up Joe, as one who hugs the globalist elites, you ought to become familiar with this dictionary used by those elites. If the presence of a turbine should cause an individual to experience disorders such as sleep loss, fatigue, nausea, headaches, tinnitus, disturbances of balance, dizziness, stress, depression, irritability, anxiety, perturbed steroid hormone secretion, hypertension and socio-behavioural changes... well... Come on Joe... They would have health concern.
I couldn't care less what they do, but since you're the one so quick to be the word police here, I thought I'd throw that "Brown Note" back your way Ziggy.
"headaches, sleep problems, concentration or memory problems, disequilibrium, dizziness and nausea" are all health problems and causes of additional chronic health problems.

Besides, this whole concept was disproved a long time ago, reference the link I provided.
The whole concept was first brought about by Fake Science. There is plenty of evidence of Fake Science pushing Americans around like stupid dumb sheep. If I live near one of these, and it gives me anxieties, then, according to WHO, I suffer ill health as a result. Not me, it's the God All Mighty WHO that many of you sheep bow down to in the name of science. Al Gore turned me away from "Science". Oh... By the way, I am currently in a science lab. I work in the sciences... perhaps I'm faking it?
A quick cost/ benefit look at wind turbines vs air pollution from coal and oil, the wind turbines are the lesser of two pollutants, especially if they are placed in deserts or high mountains. Will wind replace coal or oil? Probably not, but it’s a good step in the right direction of reducing dependency on fossil fuels
Wind can be part of the replacement for fossil fuels. We just need to break through the propaganda put forward by the fossil fuel industries.
Definitely, one thing that amazed me was the space shuttles propulsion system, the combustion of hydrogen and the shuttles exhaust you may wonder? Water vapor! We have the ability but we lack the will, and one can’t help but wonder if the propaganda claim you made is part of the problem.
When truth is manipulated, there is a problem. The globalist's drive for political consensus has,
when speaking of Climate. Quality science is done by careful observation and thoughtful debate. If you step outside of the general "scientific" consensus, you'll likely loose the pulpit (lectern). It's not my theory, it's fact. There are many being banned from even speaking at many universities, simply because they fall outside the consensual narrative. Another thing to consider is funding. You do your science, but it better line up with the expectations of those providing the grant.
"Blinding me with science-science"
Hi Tony,
I am kind of busy right now, and I didn’t get a chance to do any research, but, here goes off the top of my head: Liquid Oxygen (LOX) mixed with Hydrogen is the main propellant formerly on the Space Shuttle and other rocket boosters. The LOX/Hydrogen is pretty explosive and requires special handling. The LOX has to be frozen to be used properly to as close to Absolute Zero. Moisture is involved in the freezing process. Water is injected on to the launch pad to reduce the extreme temperature of the launch pad. A rocket is un-throttleable, so, once it is ignited...get out of the way. The Space Shuttle (I miss it) got the best and worst fuel economy standards of any vehicle in history. I remember 11-12k/lbs per second at launch to next to nothing during orbital maneuvering. The Space Shuttle was awesome. America is great.
Good letter Juliet for food for thought. Yes its the lesser of two evils. Ask the people in Carbon Co. that are fighting them and will have to live near them if the Judge votes in Atlantic Winds favor. They should not be built close to where people live. But hey, they have been given subsidies so be aware, they might be coming to a neighborhood near you.
All I know is this, I think it’s imperative to pass on a clean planet to successive generations, of not only future humans but animals and plants alike. We all share this small dot adrift in the vast universe. I understand the concerns of property values and I understand science doesnt seem to compare to a perfect god written about in ancient, secluded pre- scientific cultures. But one thing humans do very well is learn, take what fails and improve on it. So on those grounds I’m supporting new and innovative ideas to generate power, offset pollution, and preserve a cleaner planet for the tomorrow’s to come long after I’m dead .
Thanks CG, I feel the love. You just proved the ones who make diversity, inclusiveness, open debate and freedom of speech the political holy grail, are the ones that make diversity... a holy grail.
Have a good day.
