Driver faces DUI after crash with child in car

A Carbon County driver is facing charges of driving under the influence and related counts following a one-vehicle crash that occurred at 2:42 a.m. on Feb. 16 along the northeast extension of the turnpike in South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County.

State police at Pocono said troopers responded to a reported crash at mile marker 57.5 northbound. On scene, troopers found a 2016 Kia Sportage had struck the center concrete barrier and was stopped in the left lane. The driver was identified as Robert W. Piccirillo, 28, of Palmerton. He had a 3-year-old child in the vehicle. Both were transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, for medical evaluation, troopers said.

Troopers said Piccirillo submitted to a blood test. DUI and related charges are pending the test results, troopers added.
