Duck race to benefit Palmerton Cat Project

The Palmerton Cat Project is gearing up to host its largest fundraiser of the year this weekend.

Saturday will mark the nonprofit’s second annual duck race, held at the Riverwalck Saloon in Parryville.

Watching the rubber ducks make their way down the river will only be part of the fun. The event will also feature vendors, an auction, food and drinks. First prize is $150 in cash, donated by Carbon County Friends of Animals.

“This (Palmerton Cat Project) is a completely all volunteer organization,” said Barbara Greenzweig, president. “When they support us, they allow us to continue to do this work, and in fact allow us to do more.”

Duck are priced as follows: $5 for one duck, $12 for three or $20 for six. All proceeds go toward supporting the project, as well as trap, neuter and release efforts in the area.

And according to Greenzweig, the support is much needed. The project has helped more than 130 cats in the Palmerton area since January, she said.

“It’s been a very, very busy year for us,” Greenzweig said. “The proceeds from this duck race are what allow us to do the work that we do with area cats.”

So far, Greenzweig estimates, hundreds of ducks have already been sold. Ducks will also be available for purchase that day until 2:30 p.m.

The event opens at noon, and the race starts at 3 p.m.
