Eldred Township considering additional parking for community center

The West End Food Pantry has asked the township to consider allowing it to pave over part of the lot adjacent to the Eldred Township Community Center to be used for overflow parking.

Supervisor JoAnn Bush brought up the request at the Eldred meeting Wednesday night.

The lot in question is currently one of two ballfields. The large lot also has a playground and open, unused space.

“There are other options in town and these ballfields have not been used for three years now by the Little League,” said Bush. “The pantry has asked to pave the lot for additional parking on distribution days.”

According to Bush, the pantry already uses the lot and the surface needs to be graded. The pantry has agreed to cover the cost of the project.

“We are not ready to give an answer at this time,” Bush said. “But I am asking us to consider it and to see what will be needed if we are to agree.”

Supervisor Gary Hoffman suggested that the township engineers look into what might be needed before further consideration of the request.

Bush said that she was looking into improving the existing playground on the same lot.

“With some grants I hope to improve what is there and to maybe add some new ADA equipment for kids with special needs,” Bush said.

In the meantime Bush requested $1,000 to buy flowers and mulch to fix up the exterior of the community center for the season.

Also during the meeting the supervisors said they had received a letter from the planning commission outlining possible steps that the township could consider regarding the application of biosolids on farms in the township.

Chairwoman Mary Anne Clausen thanked the commission for its “excellent” effort and stated that the board still had some questions and that a letter would be sent back to the commission requesting additional information.

Clausen said details will be discussed at another time.

The supervisors also approved the purchase of a trail camera for use at the Wes Flo entrance to Mock Park.
