Election 2017: Schuylkill school board races
Two of four school districts in the Times News coverage area had races for seat on the board of education on Tuesday.
Here are the vote totals.
Tamaqua Area
No race in Tamaqua Area.
Those elected to four-year terms were Thomas A. Rottet, 2,371; Bryan Miller, 2,277; Nicholas E. Boyle, 2,254, the three had both nominations; and Republican Mark Rother, 2,209.
Mahanoy Area
In the Mahanoy Area School District there were races for a two-year and for a four-year terms.
Republican Jay Hanley easily won the two-year term with 1,340 votes to 481 votes for Democrat Larry Levy.
There were five candidates for four four-year terms seats. The top four were Karen E. Yedsena, 1,529; Steven Gnall 1,420; John Honus 1,397, the three had both nominations; and Republican Jim Mitchell 1,104. Finishing out of the running was Hanley with 1,006.
Blue Mountain
No race in Blue Mountain School District,
Four seats, four-year terms, were to be elected with four candidates. Order of finish was Herman Robert Fligge, 3,043; Anne Usuka, 3,028; Dean Gherghel, 2,972; and John A. Carestia, 2,886. All four had both nominations.
Hazleton Area
In the Hazleton Area School District, residents of McAdoo and Kline Township, in Schuylkill County, vote in the district.
Four seats up for election with five candidates. The order of finish: Linda DeCosmo, 997; Republican Alex C. van Hoekelen, 95; Bob Mehalick, 918; and Ed Shemansky, 910. DeCosmo, Mehalick and Shemansky had both nominations. Odd man out is Robert W. Childs, 764. These vote totals will be added to the votes in Luzerne County for a final tally.
Unofficial results indicate that DeCosmo, van Hoekelen, Mehalick and Shemansky were elected.
