Events planned for state parks

Various events are planned for Tuscarora and Locust Lake state parks in Barnesville, Schuylkill County.

• Join naturalist Robin Tracey on the Oak/Hemlock trail at Locust Lake on Sunday, June 23. The trail is 4 miles in length an difficult. The trail loops around Locust Creek and traverses up the mountain for a great view of the forest below. Part of the hike includes the “tree identification trail” made by one of the area Eagle Scouts. Dogs are welcome, but must be leashed and get along with other pets and people. Meet at the visitor parking lot at 10:30 a.m. For more information contact Tracey at 570-467-2506. •Join Tracey for a hike at Swatara State Park on Friday, June 28. The trail is 7 miles in length and moderate. The trail runs parallel to Swatara Creek. The hike will be down to the old steel bridge and crossing to make a loop around the back part of the park and hikers will be visiting th e Bordner cabin. Meet in the parking lot on Sand Siding Road just off Route 443 in Suedberg at 10:30 a.m. Bring a lunch and water. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed and get along with other pets and people. • Conservation volunteer Dave McSurdy will present a program on Saturday, June 29, in the Locust Lake amphitheater at 5 p.m. The program will show how Indian lives changed from the Stone Age when the Europeans first came to the United States. This is a very informative and family friendly program. Shine only.

On Sunday, June 30, at 10:30 a.m. hikers will explore the mountain behind Locust Lake park and visit Silver Creek Fire Tower and Reservoir. This hike is 7.5 miles in length and difficult. The pine stands and brush are perfect habitat for birds and other wildlife. Meet at the visitor parking lot at Locust Lake located before the contact station to carpool at 10:15 a.m. Bring a lunch and your dog for a nice relaxing hike in the woods. All pets must be leashed and get along with people and other pets. Shine only.
