Events scheduled for area state parks
Events for Tuscarora and Locus Lake state parks in Barnesville, have been announced.
• At 5 p.m. Saturday, a dive demonstration will be presented by the Ryan Township Emergency Rescue Dive team. The program will be held in the south boat launch parking lot. There will be a demonstration on protective gear and the divers will enter the water with a wireless communicator and underwater video camera. Spectators will be able to talk to the divers underwater and view what the divers see on an underwater camera monitor. The program will end with a water safety class. Shine only. • On July 28, a global warming at Locust Lake amphitheater program will be held starting at 7 p.m. In case of inclement weather the program will be held in the program shelter.
Ed Perry is a retired U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service aquatic biologist who began working for the National Wildlife Federation on their global warming campaign, traveling around Pennsylvania to educate fellow hunters, anglers and the conservation community to take action on global warming. His presentation will give examples of current impacts to fish and wildlife in the state and what actions can be taken to reduce carbon pollution.
• At 3:30 p.m. Aug. 4, a park naturalist will conduct a salamander program at Locust Lake. She will discuss salamander anatomy, habitat and role in the ecosystem. A field identification capture and release walk will follow. Participants will meet at the amphitheater and bring along a plastic container for animal collection. • On Aug. 9, a park naturalist will lead a spectacular hike to Wolf Creek Falls in Saint Clair starting at 10:30 a.m. Meet at the north end of the Walmart parking lot off Route 61 in the Coal Creek Commerce Center. The hike is 7 miles and rated difficult. The hike is dog-friendly, but all pets must be leashed and get along well with people and other pets. Bring water and a lunch. • Join the park naturalist for a basic kayaking course at Tuscarora Park. Kayaks, paddles and personal flotation devices will be provided. Maximum weight capacity is 275 pounds. Registration is required by signing up at the park office before the event via phone at 570-467-2506 or in person. No online or fax registrations will be taken. Each participant can send a donation check of $10 made payable to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The class will be canceled in case of inclement weather. There is limited space for the program. People with their own equipment can join in for a $3 charge. Meet at the Lakeside concessions stand at Tuscarora. Each child must be accompanied by an adult and be 12 years of age or older.
Class dates are Aug. 12 at 10 a.m.; Aug. 26 at 9 a.m.; and Sept. 2 at 9 a.m. All classes are posted on website, dcnr.state.pa.us under the calendar of events for Tuscarora State Park.
