Farmer complains about students driving in fields
The Pleasant Valley school board heard a complaint last week by district resident Neil Murphy. Murphy is a farmer in the district who has complained to the district on a number of occasions about students who have driven off the road and made “doughnuts” in his field and on other properties in the district.
Murphy recently followed a set of tire tracks to a stopping point where an occupant of the vehicle had gotten out and dropped a Pleasant Valley lanyard on the ground.
“I apologize on behalf of the school district,” said Superintendent David Piperato. “We don’t condone this behavior and we will cooperate with the authorities on this as well.”
“We provide student parking here at the school as a privilege to our students,” Piperato added. “We will revoke that privilege and hold those students accountable.”
In other news, Director Laura Jecker made a motion that the district consider raising the rate of substitute teacher and staff for the next school year. Jecker said that Pleasant Valley lags behind other local districts, which is causing a greater shortage in qualified substitutes.
Vice President Susan Kresge asked Director of Human Resources John Burrus to provide an updated list of what other districts in the area are paying so the board can consider the motion in the future.
The district also approved a contract with Tremco/Weatherproofing Technologies Inc. in the amount of $417,604 to restore five sections of the roof on the high school. The contract is subject to the solicitor’s review.
Contracts were approved for Templeton Advantage for $2,370 for a board workshop, Always Safe Sidewalks for $5,060 for sidewalk repair at PVE, $7,100 for Barry Isett and Associates for preparing an engineering services proposal for the Main Campus Lagoon.
