Few local races in Schuylkill County election

There are a few local races to be decided in Tuesday’s general election for voters in the Times News coverage area of Schuylkill County.

In the county overall, there is just one race, for district attorney, while there are races for seats on the state’s three higher courts.

Here is a quick look at the local races:

Coaldale

In Coaldale there are three seats up on council with four candidates on the ballot.

Anne Girard is in the best position to win one of those seats as she was able to get both the Democratic and Republican nominations in the spring primary. The other three candidates seeking seats on the governing body are Angela Krapf and Francis Hutta, both Democrats; and Republican Joel Johnson. The terms are for four years.

Herb Whildin got both party nominations for the office of mayor in the spring primary and appears headed to a four-year term.

Catherine M. Papesh is the Democratic candidate for tax collector and has no opposition. The term is four years.

West Penn Township

There is a race for a six-year term as township supervisor in West Penn Township.

Lawrence J. Stival got the Democratic nod in the spring with Timothy M. Houser the Republican candidate.

Helene V. Zeigler is the Republican candidate for tax collector with no opposition.

Middleport

In Middleport borough there is a race for three four-year terms on borough council with four candidates.

John R. DiFilippo Jr., Joseph A. Rolenaitis and Mary Jane Heisner are Democratic candidates for the three seats with Wendy Dempsey the Republican hopeful.

John Leshko is the Republican candidate for mayor and is unopposed, as is Democrat Marian Donlin for tax collector. Both are four-year terms.

McAdoo

McAdoo voters have choices to pick from for mayor and borough council.

Democrat Robert S. Wills and Republican Dane Watro are vying for a four-year term as mayor.

There are three seats, four-year terms, for borough council with five candidates. Peter P. Minneci is in the best position to win one of those seats as he got both party nominations in the spring. Candidates for the other two seats are Democrats John J. Shigo and Clara Preputnick facing off against Republicans Edward J. Bielen Sr. and Francis Frank Orem.

There is also a race for tax collector, four-year term. Democrat Andrew T. eBalko is facing off against Republican William J. Slovik.

Mahanoy City

There are plenty of races in Mahanoy City.

Democrat Patricia Schnitzius seeks a four-year term as mayor. She is the current mayor, having been appointed to the position. She is opposed by Republican Dennis Wiessner.

There are three seats up for borough council, four-year terms, with four candidates. Two candidates are in the best position to win two of the seats. Scott Kline and Thom Maziekas have both party nominations. The two remaining candidates for the one seat left are Democrat Thomas C. McCabe and Republican Louis Huber.

There is a two-year seat up for election on council with Patricia Mullins getting both nominations in the spring.

Democrat Teckla A. McCabe is the lone candidate for a four-year term as tax collector.

Tamaqua

In Tamaqua there are no races.

Nathan J. Gerace got both nominations in the spring for a four-year term as mayor. There is a reported write-in candidate.

Borough council has three seats up, four-year terms, with three candidates on the ballot.

David E. Mace is almost assured of one seat as he got both party nominations in the spring. Also on the ballot are James E. Hull, Democrat, and Ritchie A. Linkhorst, Republican.

Pamela J. McCullion got both nominations in the spring for another four-year term as tax collector.

Rush Township

Incumbent Republican Jeannie Montroni is the lone candidate on the ballot for another six-year term as supervisor. Michelle Kabilko got both party nominations in the spring for tax collector.

Schuylkill Township

In Schuylkill Township Charles A. Hosler got both party nominations in the spring for a six-year term as supervisor and Republican Paul Delpais is the lone candidate on the ballot for tax collector.

Walker Township

Like Rush Township, Walker has no races.

Christine M. Troxell got both party nods for a two-year term as supervisor; and incumbent Craig Wagner is the lone Republican on the ballot for a six-year term as supervisor.

Republican Diane Yvonne Malay is the lone name on the ballot for a four-year term as tax collector.

New Ringgold

New Ringgold also has no races.

John Belsak got both party nominations in the spring for a four-year term as mayor. There are two, four-year terms, up for borough council with Democrat Roger Freed and Republican Jason Gardwell the only two candidates.

Kline Township

Matthew P. Corra Sr. got both party nominations in the spring for a six-year term as supervisor and Stephen J. Sheer did the same for a four-year term as tax collector.

New Philadelphia

There is actually a shortage of candidates in New Philadelphia borough in which write-in candidates may fill the open spots.

Democrat Frances C. Tkach is the lone candidate and is seeking another four-year term as mayor.

There are four seats, four-year terms, on council with just two candidates, Democrats Elizabeth Benulis and Christine Carey. Write-ins will fill the other two positions. There is also a two-year term for council but there are no candidates listed so write-ins will determined that seat.

Blythe Township

In Blythe Township there are no races as Chris Wallace got both nominations for a six-year term as supervisor and Democrat Joan M. Dranginis is the lone candidate for a four-year term as tax collector.

Ryan Township

In Ryan Township Republican David R. Morgan is the lone name on the ballot for a six-year term as supervisor and Mary Peca got both party nods in the spring for a four-year term as tax collector.

Delano Township

In Delano Township Democrat Jay Ryan is the only name on the ballot for a six-year term as supervisor. Republican Jason Scarcella is the only name on the ballot for a two-year term as supervisor.

Democrat Ann Pascavage is the lone candidate for tax collector, four-year term.

In all races listed, there is a spot for write-in candidates to challenge any candidate listed on the ballot.
