An event to raise funds for a local charity is set to step off Saturday in Lehighton.

The inaugural Princess and Hero Family Fun Day will be held from noon to 5 p.m. at the Lehighton Recreation Center, 243 S. Eighth St.

It will consist of free admission, character meet and greets, and free stations for coloring, fingernail painting, temporary tattoos and glitter tattoos.

The character meet and greet schedule is as follows: 12:30-1:30 p.m., Snow Sisters, Winter Hero and Spider Hero; 2-3 p.m., Voyager Princess, Iron Hero and Strange Hero; 3:30-4:30 p.m., Mermaid Princess, Lord of Stars.

In addition, there will also be a costume contest for all ages at 2:30 p.m., with age groups consisting of 0-3, 4-8, 9-14, 15 and up, or group.

Various local business have donated prizes for costume contest winners, who will also receive a $10 gift certificate to use at any of the event vendors.

“The event is family friendly, and the costumes must be respectful,” said Jodi Cruver, who added that there are to be no weapons, unless orange-tipped.

Cruver said there is also a raffle for movie posters donated by the Mahoning Valley Cinema, adding that donation cans will be located at the free stations. There is also a bake sale.

“Our vendors include face painting, henna tattoos, caricatures, tutus, slime, event planning, Disney travel agency, jewelry, candles, hair accessories, dog rescue, doll clothing, games, comics, much more,” she said. “The kitchen will be open with great food.”

For Cruver, who resides in Mahoning Township, the event is extra special as her daughter, Erika, has been doing cosplay for several years.

“She dresses up as several different characters and goes to different events,” she said. “People of all ages get so excited to see her.”

Cruver jokingly said she was the “mastermind” who came up with the idea for Princess and Hero Family Fun Day.

“I came up with the idea, and my daughter and I put it in motion,” she said. “I’ve had a lot of support from friends and family.”

Cruver said that the event is able to raise funds for a local charity makes it even more special.

“One day I just thought it would be fun to have an event with her and some of her cosplay friends here in Lehighton,” she said. “One thing led to another, and here we are. Raising money for Family Promise is an added bonus.”
