Do you think your chili recipe has what it takes to be called the best?

Are there secret ingredients that take your recipe’s flavor to another level?

Do your friends recommend you bring chili to all their gatherings? If so, Galen Glen Winery is looking for you.

The Andreas winery is hosting its seventh annual Chili Cookoff on Jan. 18, 2020, and is looking for area chili masters to throw their chef’s cap into the ring. The event benefits the West Penn Fire Company.

“It’s an honor to do something to help our local, volunteer first responders,” said Kathy Matson, tasting room manager. “These brave men and women put their lives in harms way every day to keep the members of our community safe.”

The winery says there is space for five contenders for the competition and it is open to all amateur and professional chefs. The only official rule is that the chili recipe includes a Galen Glen wine. Chili can be beef, turkey, venison, vegetarian or vegan and should be at least 8 quarts in size.

The winner of the event will take home a $100 gift certificate to the winner and of course, chili bragging rights.

On the day of the competition, chili will be served from noon to 3 p.m. to guests and those over 21 receive a glass of wine and a sample of each chef’s chili for $9.

They then vote for their favorite to help determine who will take home this year’s crown. Winners will be announced at 4 p.m.

The annual chili cookoff has raised thousands of dollars for the first responders since its inception in 2014. Each year, the event draws approximately 300 visitors to sample and vote.

Past winners include Todd Keller of Kutztown, Brian Eagers of Emmaus, Cheryl Leone of New Ringgold, Jake Snyder of Notch Eight in Jim Thorpe and Chef Joe Sweeney of Philadelphia, Tripti Stashefski of Lehighton and Chef Frank from the Marion Hose Bar in Jim Thorpe.

For more information and entry forms, call the winery at 570-386-3682 or email gruveegruner@galenglen.com. The deadline to register is Dec. 31.

Galen Glen Winery is located at 255 Winter Mountain Drive, Andreas.
