IRS: Jim Thorpe school owes $107K
The IRS says that Jim Thorpe Area School District owes $107,000 in back taxes dating to 2016.
The federal agency recently notified the school district of the unpaid taxes, and threatened to seize district property if it isn’t paid.
In a letter sent on Sept. 28, the IRS said that the district has one month to pay the bill or appeal it. If they failed to do so, the IRS could seize property starting Oct. 28.
A representative for the IRS said they cannot comment on individual taxpayers.
Superintendent John Rushefski said the district received the letter on Sept. 30, and has been in contact with the IRS to resolve the matter.
“There’s an IRS matter that Jim Thorpe Area School District is in the middle of resolving. It’s something that we discovered in late September.
“We’re following the proper protocols to resolve it,” he said.
The letter was addressed to Lauren Kovac, the district’s former business manager.
At the time the district received the letter, Kovac was under paid suspension during an investigation of the business office.
According to the invoice received by the school district, all but $3,120.37 of the amount owed comes from 2016. The invoice says the balance is related to “ESRP,” referring to the “Employee Share Responsibility Provisions” of the Affordable Care Act.
ESRP, also known as the “employer mandate” of the Affordable Care Act, requires large employers to provide health care coverage to full-time employees.
Rushefski said the district administration is still trying to determine exactly why the IRS is seeking unpaid taxes from 2016.
He said the district provides insurance to staff members as required by law.

The principal is a great person who does great at his job. He also has nothing to do with how certain bills are paid- thus why the letter was addressed to the business manager.
I own 2 properties in the district. This bill affects me directly. I have just as much anger as the next person. But please educate yourself so you can focus your disdain towards the appropriate parties.
It really is that simple. If you can't or don't, it'll be obvious your just that guy who lives near him who got pissed over the summer and won't stop slandering him.
What's it going to take to get you to stop? I mean a lawsuit could hurt you "in your pockets" I guess
What is even better is that you claim to not live in the district, but yet you know so much about a principal that has absolutely no effect on you.
Even more strange, is that no one in Jim Thorpe seems to have any clue what the hell you are talking about.
So I will ask again, even though I know the answer, outside "Durrr, everyone knows"... What is your proof? Upload it to Google Doc, or filebin, or easyupload
Oh, no? Yeah, I didn't think so. You just run your little mouth cause you like hearing yourself talk. But please, tell me how I am the fool, and you are saying things that are entirely, factually false
Again though, you're certainly definitely not the fool here.
I have always appreciated seeing trolls on the internet not know when they are getting played, and turn into the best version of themselves... Keep being you, cause you have nothing else to go by
The problem with the business manager has existed since she was hired. It is alleged she did not know the criteria for Obamacare and therefore, the Feds were never informed the district had health insurance for all its employees resulting on the present lien on the school district. For the record, past and present directors knew the business manager was a problem.
Trust and verify is a common sense.
Protect the students and save the community.
Sincerely,
Citizen David F. Bradley Sr.
