Jeremiha Dilts, a senior from Gilbert
“I do feel relatively safe in the school. I know that it is controversial but I think that some teachers that have the necessary qualifications and training and do wish to carry a gun should be allowed to. But I stress that they must have all of the necessary qualifications, otherwise absolutely not.”

Aaren Day, a freshman from Kunkletown
“I do feel safe in the school but there are some things that could be improved on. One thing is IDs. Some people just don’t seem to understand the importance of wearing them. We need to spread the reasons around so everyone understands that we will know who everyone is and if they belong here.”

Adam Tacoronte, a junior from Effort
“I believe that they keep us as safe as they can with some locker searches and some metal detectors. They have also showed us how to hide and to try and be safe. But there are multiple entrances and exits throughout the school and they can’t have security at all of them all of the time. More metal detectors and maybe a greater monitoring of students’ social media could help make us safer.”

Jason Van Housen, a sophomore from Effort
“Overall I have had a pleasant experience in the school and I have never felt unsafe. I wouldn’t know how to make us feel safer because even when there is an issue I believe that the school has done a good job in taking care of it.”

Marissa Ruggiero, a junior from Saylorsburg
“I think that children need to be learning that this is wrong from a young age. Too often these kids think that this issue is a joke when it is a serious problem. I do personally feel safe in the school, but I think that the younger kids often treat sad or depressing things as a joke and they need to be better informed to understand the seriousness of the issues so that things don’t get out of hand.”

Faith Kelly, a junior from Saylorsburg
“Personally I do feel safe in my district because I believe that we have the best security and that the teachers help out to make it a good environment. If you educate the students on what to look for on suspicious behavior then the students can have an eye out for unstable students at risk for doing something and if we all come together as a school and a group we can help to make each other safer.”

We asked about school safety in light of the number of school shootings that have taken place this school year. Most of the students we spoke to expressed a sense of being safe within the district. Here is what they had to say.
