Jim Thorpe School Board approved the following:

• Funding the Scholastic Scrimmage team’s trip to a national championship in Atlanta, Georgia, at the cost of $3,000 for four students and one chaperon. Team captain and Jim Thorpe Area High School senior class President Trevor Keefer addressed the board, asking for any possible funding, before Pearl Downs-Sheckler made a motion to fully fund the trip, which is set for Memorial Day weekend.

• Barbara Boyle was approved as a long-term substitute, BS Step 1, with a salary of $44,170.

• A $2 per hour differential for paraprofessionals that substitute for the district’s nursing staff was approved.

• A $2 per hour differential for paraprofessionals that assume the responsibilities of a daily substitute was approved.

• An increase for the daily substitute rate was approved, with the new rates set at $100 for days 1-30, $105 for days 31-60, and $110 for all days over 60.

• The daily substitute rate for retired teacher substitutes was increased to $115.

• A motion to approve the salaries for computer technicians, retroactive to July 1, 2017, was approved, with Stacy Tomko approved for $55,000 and Orell Gaynor approved for $50,000.

• Salary increases for computer technicians, athletic trainers, crossing guards and van drivers, retroactive to July 1, 2017. The computer technicians and athletic trainers will see a 3 percent increase, and the crossing guards and van drivers will receive a 50-cent-per-hour increase.

• The board approved the posting of an open position for an elementary education teacher.

• The board voted in favor of a resolution from Lehigh Carbon Community College to approve the acquisition of a building at the corner of North Sixth and West Linden streets in downtown Allentown.

In exchange for the transfer of the deed to the current Donley Center, LCCC will take the deed for the three-story turnkey condominium unit.

The currently vacant building, consisting of about 69,232 square feet, was previously occupied by The Morning Call. LCCC will only be responsible for applicable closing costs, while the sponsoring school districts, including Jim Thorpe, will not need to contribute any additional capital.
